Sam and Bam Bam

I don’t know what I love more – this adorable photo of Sam and Bam Bam (they kind of look alike, don’t you think?!) or Sam’s awesome description of him and his cat: “This is me and my cat Alabama (Bam Bam). We enjoy rock music, whiskey, women and kittens.”

Sounds like a man with excellent taste!

Changes

Dear Charley and Thurston,

It’s your eleventh birthday, and your cat-mom is preparing to become mom to a human being for the first time. Your cat-dad and I are sure that our son will be a cat lover, since both of us love cats so much – and I think he can hear and feel you purring when you’re using my bump as a pillow. We have no doubt that you will love your new “brother” since you are both such sweet and gentle cats. Thurston, you’re my “cat-dog” who greets people at the door, fetches (fake mice), and sleeps right next to me every single night. You already accept kisses on the nose from our nephew and love every person you’ve ever met. Charley, we know when there is too much human activity you’ll go find a secret hiding spot and take a nap like you usually do when there are too many humans around. You guys have never bitten, scratched, or so much as hissed at a human being. And why should you? You’re both totally pampered and content, and you get along so well with each other, having never been apart since you were born. So although we’re all in for some big changes pretty soon, we know you’ll do great.

Love,

Your cat-mom

John Lennon, cat lover

John Lennon was killed thirty years ago today, and the New York Times had some pieces on the Op-Ed page remembering him – including one from Yoko Ono where she talks about John’s love for cats:

JOHN and I are in our Dakota kitchen in the middle of the night. Three cats — Sasha, Micha and Charo — are looking up at John, who is making tea for us two.

Sasha is all white, Micha is all black. They are both gorgeous, classy Persian cats. Charo, on the other hand, is a mutt. John used to have a special love for Charo. “You’ve got a funny face, Charo!” he would say, and pat her.

Of course, Menandcats.com is not at all surprised that a talented, artistic, and inspiring man such as John Lennon was a tremendous cat lover.

Mark and Vinnie

These very handsome guys basking in a ray of sunlight are Mark (human) and Vinnie (cat). Mark’s wife says she knew Vinnie would be a part of their family when she put him on her lap at the shelter and he immediately started purring. She says, “When I first brought him home, Mark wasn’t too interested in the added responsibility. After two days, I knew Mark had a change of heart when I found a chair by the window. When I asked him why he put it there, he responded, ‘I thought Vinnie might get bored so I put it there so that he could look out the window.’ A year later, we got Vinnie a little sister. While mark loves both of his ‘children’ equally, he definitely still has a special bond with Vinnie.”

Judging by this photo, they seem to be two peas in a pod indeed!

Famous Men Who Love Cats: Jonathan Ames and Marc Maron

I’ve been a big fan of writer (and fellow Brooklynite) Jonathan Ames for ages – but somehow I didn’t know that he was a man who loves cats until I was recently listening to an episode of comedian Marc Maron’s podcast “WTF with Marc Maron” where Jonathan mentions the cats in his apartment, and how his landlord’s cat loves to hang out with him. Further research lead me to this photo and article from the NY Post, where he talks more about “Minimus, his landlord’s cat.”

Marc Maron himself is a noted ailurophile – he refers to his home as the “cat ranch” and he lives with multiple cats. He’s posted several videos online featuring his cats, and he did an interview with Paw Nation where he talks about adopting feral cats.

I already enjoyed the work of both Jonathan and Marc- knowing they love cats only makes me admire them even more!
