“Teddy and Pickles” on Funnyordie.com

This video on Funnyordie.com is the first in a series to explore “the complex relationship between men and their cats.” David Title, the creator of the series, says he was inspired by his own experience as a man who came to be a cat-person by way of his girlfriend having a cat. David says episode two of the series is coming soon, so stay tuned!

Joey Ramone & Cat

joey_ramone_catMenandcats.com reader Juliana sent me this wonderful photo of the late, great Joey Ramone with a feline friend. Little did Juliana know that the Ramones are one of my all-time favorite bands and that I love, love, love Joey Ramone. In fact, when I got married, I suggested my husband and I both change our last name to “Ramone” (if you get married in NY State, both husband and wife can legally change their last names to a mutually agreed upon last name that is neither the husband nor wife’s original surname). The husband, however, rejected this idea. In my heart, though, I’ll always be Janine Ramone.

Coming soon: 2010 Calendar!

Believe it or not, the idea for menandcats.com started out as the idea to make a calendar of men and cats, but somehow along the way, it morphed into a blog.

However, PUPP needs funding to help kickstart all our great programs which help people by helping pets! So, menandcats.com is going to create a 2010 calendar with proceeds going to PUPP. As an added bonus, the calendars will contain photos not seen on the website. They will be available before the end of the year, hopefully no later than December 1st (these will make great holiday gifts!)

If you want to contribute a photo to the calendar, send an e-mail to janine at menandcats dot com with the subject “calendar photo.” Please include the first name of the man and cat(s) and your name as you’d like it to appear in the credit. I will notify you if your photo is chosen for inclusion.

All photographers will receive credit for their work, this is a great opportunity for national exposure and will be helping out a great cause!

Cooler temps = More feline cuddling

I’m a summer person, and although I enjoy many things about Autumn (pumpkins, apples, and a return to fall knitting come to mind) I don’t like knowing that winter is soon to come. I’m always cold, no matter how many sweaters, scarves, and gloves I layer on and hot beverages I drink.

One thing that I do like about cooler weather, though, is the spike in cat cuddling – as demonstrated by the graph below. There’s a direct inverse proportion between temperature and amount of feline cuddling. When the weather cools, the feline-to-feline and feline-to-human cuddling both increase dramatically, especially on the part of Charley. Normally the more independent one, Charley is drawn to a blanket like a moth to a flame. When I put a blanket on my lap, he will occasionally actually come and sit on me. Both days this past weekend I woke up in bed to find two cats on me.

Ethan, Buster, Arthur and Wheatabix

Menandcats.com reader Laura wrote in to let me know about her husband, Ethan, and their three cats: Buster, Arthur, and Wheatabix. Buster was the cat that won Ethan’s heart – he was not a “cat person” but was convinced by a friend with a litter of kittens to adopt Buster. Ethan intended for Buster to be Laura’s cat but Laura says that Ethan and Buster became like “peas and carrots.” Apparently Buster was the gateway cat, because Ethan’s newfound love of kitties led to the addition of  homeless kitties Sir Arthur Colbert and  Squire Aramis Wheatabix. Wheatabix is  pictured wearing a bumblebee hat, which made me remark to my husband “I think this might be the best photo I’ve ever seen” (since I’m obsessed with bees as well as cats).
