Famous Men Who Love Cats: Michael Showalter

Michael Showalter is a funny dude. He was in the TV show “The State”, the movies “Wet Hot American Summer” and “The Baxter”, and the comedy sketch troupe “Stella.” So, already, what’s not to love about him? But add to that the facts that, according to this NY Times article, he lives in Brooklyn and says “I love cats. I had a cat for 14 years” – well, that makes him Officially Awesome. He has a new comedy album out called “Sandwiches and Cats.” As long as he doesn’t combine the two into a cat sandwich, he’ll have an honored place on menandcats.com.

Love is in the air

Ah, February. Love is in the air, with Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching. Two things I love are pets and New York City. So let me remind you, dear readers, it’s I Love NYC Pets month!! It’s a month-long celebration including adoption events, extended shelter hours, and spaying and neutering promotions. So if you’re looking for love, head over to your local shelter and adopt a cat (or two) or a dog. You’ll get many years of unconditional love from an animal who needs you. Don’t get me started on how many pets in New York City get euthanized each year. So have a heart – adopt a pet.

Glow in the Dark Cats

No need to buy a nightlight, just get some genetically modified glow in the dark cats: “South Korean scientists tinkering with fluorescence protein genes say they have bred white Turkish Angora cats to glow red under ultraviolet light.” Um, the question is, why did they do this? “The researchers told the AFP that their work could help unravel mysteries of some 250 genetic diseases suffered by both humans and cats. The findings also could be used to clone endangered tigers, leopards, and other animals, the report said.” Oh, OK. That makes sense.

There’s already a lolcat about it.

Switching Brains

At the menandcats.com HQ, the cats are usually fairly predictable. Thurston will generally be snuggling with me when I wake up and waiting for me on the bed when I get out of the shower; Charley will regularly wait for me outside of the bathroom when I’m in there and likes to be picked up and draped over my shoulder – but only if it’s the RIGHT shoulder, not the left.

Occasionally, however, the cats seem to temporarily “switch brains” and start acting like each other (sometimes I joke that they actually share one brain). The frightening thing is that now my husband I do this too sometimes. Usually I am always cold, he is hot… but one day he will be cold, and I’ll say “We’ve switched brains like the cats!” Recently he had a dream that seemed like a dream I should have had instead of him. Brain switching!!
