A cat survived a 27-story fall from a high-rise building in Manhattan, while a man with a tree service used his harness equipment to rescue a cat stuck in a tree on Staten Island – the cat had been up for four days while his desperate family tried to get him down, calling upon all kinds of city agencies who weren’t able to coax the feline down. The cat’s owner, Richard, told the Staten Island advance “sleeping the last four nights hadn’t been the same with out his feline companion around to wake him up.”

Kitty catwalk & condo
Check out this great Catwalk that cat-lovin’ man David built for his feline friend Ginger. David’s wife, Jennifer, says he built the catwalk after he made Ginger a much-loved kitty condo. I wish I had the space to do something like this for my cats!
Greg & Mr. Micawber
This is Greg, taking a nap with his feline friend Mr. Micawber. Greg’s wife, Tasha, says “Mr. Micawber was a rescued cat in foster care. He stayed in foster care for 4 years; no one wanted him. He had skin allergies and was missing fur and had scabs on his back. When he came to live with us, we changed his diet and gave him a herbal allergy remedy, and now he is doing much better.” She reports that Mr. Micawber is very cute and playful. Greg refers to Mr. Micawber as a “fine fellow” and Mr. M. sleeps with them both every night but really favors Greg!
Isn’t it amazing how a little TLC can often transform an animal that no one wanted – and who might have otherwise been euthanized – into a faithful companion providing many years of joy?
Catvertising
A menandcats.com reader, John, sent me a link to this blog post about the marketing of cat food – which was pretty amusing in and of itself, but also got me thinking about a long lost (to me, anyway) cat food commercial. In 1999, I spent a few months in Brussels. During this time, there was a commercial for Whiskas shown often on tv which involved some kind of pouch of moist cat food that would morph into a pair of sexy lips that said “Allo!” and made the cat go crazy. I think the commercial was in Flemish. I’ve searched high and low, YouTubed and Googled, to find a clip of this ad – which used to absolutely crack me up – to no avail. I appeal to you, dear readers – does anyone know what I’m talking about or have a clip of this catvertisement?!
I could have told you this without conducting a nationwide survey.
Well, lo and behold, the myth of the “crazy (single) cat lady” is untrue. CATalyst Council released a study of the best cities for kitties (Tampa, Phoenix, San Francisco, Portland [Oregon], Denver, Boston, Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta, and Minneapolis, in case you’re wondering). The study took into account cat ownership rates in cities, among other feline-friendly factors. So, are the cities with the highest rates of cat ownership populated by more single women? Nope! It turns out they are full of cat-owners AND single men, leading to the logical conclusion that yes, men really do love cats as much as, if not more than, women.
