All cat and a bag of chips

Yesterday, I saw a woman walking down the street carrying a cat, and eating a bag of chips. Of course, upon seeing a cute cat, I let out an involuntary “Awww!” The woman smiled, and said to me, “He likes being outside with me.” I told her, “What a good cat. My cats would never do that!”  “He is good,” she agreed. I told my husband about this sighting, and naturally, I could not resist the opportunity to make a bad pun… so I ended up commenting on this encounter as being “all cat and a bag of chips.”

Cats and coffee

I think Thurston has developed a Pavlovian response to the smell of coffee. Often, when I drink my coffee, Thurst will hop on my lap and sit there contentedly while I sip my drink. Now, as soon as he smells coffee, his nose twitches and he runs over to me immediately, ready to jump into my lap. I think I’ve inadvertently conditioned him to think coffee = lap. I’ve gotten pretty good at balancing a cup of coffee in one hand while petting a large, needy tabby cat with the other hand. Well, when I was a child my main goals in life were to drink coffee (check!), have a cat (check! check! Two cats), and live in New York City (check!) You could either say I’ve accomplished all of my life’s goals, or I had really low ambitions.

In other Store Cat news…

There’s been good news on the Brooklyn store cat front, but also some sad news. The liquor store LeNell’s (which has a great selection of wine with animals on the labels), in Red Hook, reported in their newsletter,

“Our sweet little Whiskey kitty got run over last week.  She will be missed.  LeNell was out of town at her 20th high school reunion (thank heavens she survived that) when it happened.  Some very sweet neighbors buried her in Ben’s backyard and poured some whiskey on her grave in LeNell’s absence.  The shop won’t be the same without her. ”

Sorry, LeNell, to hear about the loss of your cat.

Help find Gwendoline a home!

Let’s see if we can continue with our success of finding homes for cats who need them after saving Boris! Gwendoline, a cat currently residing in New York City, needs a new home. Her owner, Jessica, has the opportunity to relocate to Africa for her dream job of a socially responsible trade company. How cool is that? There is just one hitch: Gwendoline needs a new place to live! Understandably, Jessica doesn’t want to give Gwendoline to a shelter where she won’t know what the fate of her beloved cat might be. Jessica says Gwendoline is 10 years old, and “the sweetest cat I have ever known.  Sensitive and
smart, she has never had one medical issue of personality issue.  She has all of her claws and I trained her to scratch on exposed brick, however if her front claws are kept trim she does not scratch on anything.  She is medium haired, tortoise colored coat with green eyes.  She has a favorite toy, a bean bag rat that she tosses up in the air, talks to and caries around the house.  She eats laying down and scoops one kernel of food into her mouth at a time.  When I wake she comes straight up to me and stokes my face with her paw.  Every day starts with her delicate nature.”

If you can adopt the super-cute Gwendoline, or know someone who can, please contact me at janine at menandcats dot com, and I will put you in touch with Jessica.
