Help find Gwendoline a home!

Let’s see if we can continue with our success of finding homes for cats who need them after saving Boris! Gwendoline, a cat currently residing in New York City, needs a new home. Her owner, Jessica, has the opportunity to relocate to Africa for her dream job of a socially responsible trade company. How cool is that? There is just one hitch: Gwendoline needs a new place to live! Understandably, Jessica doesn’t want to give Gwendoline to a shelter where she won’t know what the fate of her beloved cat might be. Jessica says Gwendoline is 10 years old, and “the sweetest cat I have ever known.  Sensitive and
smart, she has never had one medical issue of personality issue.  She has all of her claws and I trained her to scratch on exposed brick, however if her front claws are kept trim she does not scratch on anything.  She is medium haired, tortoise colored coat with green eyes.  She has a favorite toy, a bean bag rat that she tosses up in the air, talks to and caries around the house.  She eats laying down and scoops one kernel of food into her mouth at a time.  When I wake she comes straight up to me and stokes my face with her paw.  Every day starts with her delicate nature.”

If you can adopt the super-cute Gwendoline, or know someone who can, please contact me at janine at menandcats dot com, and I will put you in touch with Jessica.

Liberty is missing

I was walking down the street earlier today in Brooklyn when I saw signs for a missing cat. Since I always stop and read missing cat signs (even though they make me upset), I learned that my favorite local store cat is missing (which then made me extra-upset). If you live in the Cobble Hill area, please be on the lookout for Beastly Bite’s Liberty – usually she’s found napping in the store window on Court Street, or hanging around in the store and climbing on customers. She’s really friendly, and all black. If you see her, call 718-522-5133. I snapped this pic with my camera phone but I’ll try to get a better one later.

The Science of Cats

The other day, Thurston and I were taking a cat-nap together when the husband woke us up (normally a somewhat dangerous undertaking) so that we wouldn’t miss the Science of Cats television show airing on the National Geographic channel. We were glad we were woken up – I learned new cat facts (the cat is only animal that domesticated itself!) and Thurston seemed especially interested in all the meowing coming from the television. So if you happen to see this airing again (or can record it), I suggest you watch it with your feline friend – perhaps with some popcorn, if your cat is like mine.

Save Boris!

As regular readers of this site know, I love cats and I love Brooklyn. So I subscribe to Brooklyn Based, and get regular e-mails about happenings in my favorite borough. Today’s e-mail included a plea to “Save Boris”. Intrigued, I clicked through to discover that Boris in fact a cat – and not just any cat, a famous cat who’s been featured in the New York Times.

So why does Boris need saving? Well, his cat-parents are moving to England, which requires a lengthy stateside quarantine for Boris that his humans can’t complete in time for their move. So Boris needs either a permanent home or a foster home for 7 months while he completes the quarantine period. Look how cute Boris is. How can you resist? I would take him myself if I didn’t already have two cats (who would be greatly upset by the presence of another animal). If you want to adopt him, e-mail boristhefamouscat@gmail.com.

PUPP: Partners United for People and Pets

I thought readers of this site might be interested in learning about a new organization called PUPP (Partners United for People and Pets) that is being formed to promote the general health and well-being of underserved individuals through the provision of pet care assistance. The ultimate goal is to advance wellness by maintaining and strengthening the bonds between these individuals and their animal companions. I plan to serve as a board member of this organization, and I hope you will visit the website to learn more about PUPP and how you can contribute!
